Steve Mathis—Treasurer

From the age 3, when he accidentally dropped a 10 pound ball on his foot and proceeded to get his first strike, the sport of bowling has always held a fascination with Steve. He was fortunate enough to have a loving family who encouraged his quest throughout the bowling world. Since joining his first adult league at the age of 16, and placed in the role of Secretary/Treasurer, Steve has actively sought out jobs and responsibilities to help out his fellow bowlers. From 1975 to 1986, Steve was an officer or team captain in most of the leagues in which he participated in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York regions. His jobs within the bowling industry during that time ranged from being a counter person to Night Manager, but he was mostly known for his lane maintenance and pro shop technology knowledge. Unfortunately, Steve, suffering from a bowling overdose and a personal crisis, retired from bowling in 1986, vowing to never pick up a ball again. That vow would be short-lived. In 1991, he moved to Washington, DC to begin working within the gay community and was quickly challenged into joining the TGIF league with the Washington Sports Association (the predecessor of today's Capitol Area Rainbowlers Association or CARA for short). From there he got involved with other CARA and non-CARA leagues, spent a several years as representative on CARA's Board and became a volunteer and eventually co-director for the Capitol Area Halloween Tournament (CHIT). In 1996, after going to his first IGBO Annual tournament, Steve actively pursued becoming an IGBO representative. In 2002, Steve moved westward and immediately found new friends and challenges in California, and quickly became the Vice-President and IGBO rep for Scratch This and the Secretary for HUGS @ Long Beach. He currently works as the financial manager of a small, national non-profit corporation, and is supported in life by his domestic partner, Paul Armstrong, 4 cats, a parrot and a really big dog named Roscoe. .
