IGBO Annual Celebrates 26 years

By The Kansas City IGBO 2006 Annual Tournament Committee
Republished from October 2006 IGBO Newsletter

May 2006—The IGBO Annual Bowling Tournament celebrated its 26th anniversary in “The City of Fountains”, Kansas City, Missouri over this past Memorial Day weekend. The tournament drew 548 bowlers from across the United States and Canada.

The IGBO 2006 Annual Tournament Committee would like to take this opportunity to thank each of the bowlers and non-participants who visited our fair city. The staff at each of the three bowling centers used for the tournament also wishes to express their thanks. The tournament committee has received several comments from the center staff as to how fun it was for them to host our group. We hope that your stay and tournament experience was enjoyable and that you were able see many of the attractions that Kansas City has to offer.

The Westin Crown Center hotel hosted the tournament bowlers for the week. The tournament started on Wednesday evening with Registration in the Washington Room of the Westin Crown Center Hotel and continued thru Saturday afternoon. Bowling started on Thursday afternoon with the Team Event.

Don’t let anyone tell you that IGBO doesn’t have some phenomenal bowlers. Congratulations to Jerry Ankenbrandt, David Garber and Dereck Van Royen, who each bowled a perfect 300 game. Jerry also shot an 800+ series and had a 298 game during the tournament. James Thigpen rolled a 299 game. Rick Harrelson rolled three 160 games for a triplicate patch. Three bowlers also picked up the 7-10 split. We had a total of 232 Special Achievement awards won during the tournament along with 8 Honor Scores. There were 828 200 or higher games bowled during the tournament along with 914 +40 pins over average games.

Now for some of the statistics of the tournament, we had 548 bowlers, of which 65 were women. Of the 65 women who entered the tournament, 42 also entered the Optional Women’s Handicapped event. There were 37 Non-participants who attended the tournament. 345 bowlers and non-participants stayed at the host hotel. 600 bowlers, non-participants and guests attended the awards banquet in the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Hotel. 228 bowlers entered the Optional Scratch Event. 184 bowlers entered the Optional Scratch Masters Event with the top 6 bowlers in each of the five divisions advancing to a round robin competition. 39 bowlers signed up to use the transportation services the tournament offered. The total monies paid out for the weekend, to include Singles, Doubles, Team, All-Events, Team All-Events, Scratch, Scratch Masters, Darkroom Doubles, Mega Brackets, Women’s Optional Handicap and raffles was $48,000.00. After all was said and done, over 230 bowlers received a check for monies won during the tournament. I hope Sharon’s hand recovers from having to sign all those checks.

Congratulations to the Atlanta Committee for winning the bid to Host the IGBO 2008 Annual Tournament.

Again, a sincere Thank You is extended to each of the bowlers from the IGBO 2006 Tournament Committee and we look forward to seeing you at upcoming events.
