IGBO President 's Report

Last Updated: 03/06/2008

Here’s to a wonderful and happy spring to our bowlers in the Northern Hemisphere and welcome back fall to our friends down under.

I was able to attend two tournaments recently that celebrated milestone anniversaries.  First, in January I attended the Alamo City Tournament in San Antonio which was celebrating their 10th year.  Congratulation to Joey, “Dolly” and the entire committee for not only providing a fabulous time, but also this was their largest turnout ever.  Here’s to hoping that your event is more successful next year and to another 10 years.

Then in February I attended GAGME in Tampa, which was celebrating their 20th year.  Their theme this year was “A Royal Event” that included an entire weekend relating to casinos and poker.  There were even blackjack, 3 card poker and a Texas hold’em tournaments in the hospitality suite.  Dave Bauer and Rob McDaniel were once again the co-directors this year as they have both been for the last several years.  This was their last time as co-directors and both are taking a well deserved break.  Thank you to the Tampa committee for making me a part of this year’s celebration.  It’s always nice to come back to the Tampa area and see such familiar faces as to where I first began bowling and was introduced to IGBO back in 1986.  As Ron Suttora our former Treasurer point out during our mid –year meeting in Detroit a couple of years ago, YES, I have been around for decades.

In a very short time, our next gathering will be in my region in the city of Atlanta, as they will be our hosts for the 28th Annual IGBO.  Mike Tamburrino, Ronnie Grist, Hal Bergin and the entire Atlanta Committee have been hard at work for the last two years preparing for our event, anticipating one of our largest turnouts in recent years.

There will be several key items to be voted on during our board meetings and the General Membership Meeting.  First, we have five board positions up for election which includes; Vice President, Secretary and Regional Directors for the Pacific Northwest, Southern and South Plains.

We will also be selecting the site to host IGBO 2010, our 30th anniversary.  We have two cities that will be making presentations to the membership.  They are Columbus, OH and Washington, DC.

Additionally, our Corporate Sponsorship with the current merchandiser of IGBO, ROK Enterprises will be up for renewal, since our current agreement expires June 30th.

For those of you not being able to attend Atlanta, I ask that you remember to send your proxies in to help up achieve quorum and vote on these key issues.  For those of you who will be in Atlanta and are not Reps, I personally invite you to attend the General Membership Meeting to see first-handed how IGBO conducts our business.

As of the writing of this article, I have received one letter of intent to host IGBO Mid-year 2010.  The deadline for submission is May 1st.

One of the key items presented during the Tournament Forum at our last meeting in Oklahoma City, was a piece of new tournament software that was developed by one our bowlers, Steve Straley.  The modification enhancements that you suggested have been added and this has been used at a couple of tournaments.  Look for a message on the blog and via the e-info yahoo group from the Tournament Co-Chairs Skip George and Sharon Stump on how to obtain your free copy of the software.

By now many of you may have heard “through the grapevine” that Las Vegas will not be our hosts for IGBO Annual 2009.  The board held a special meeting to discuss our options as defined in our by-laws.  There were several items that weighed into our decision.  The time-line schedule that was presented in Oklahoma City was not being adhered to and the committee was way behind schedule.  The board has an obligation to the organization to help ensure that the host city prepares and presents a successful event.  The board also has a fiduciary responsibility to the organization.  We would have also had to sign an amendment to the existing contracts, and if the event was not a success, we would have incurred a huge liability to the organization’s finances.  We felt that we could not allow this to happen.  Therefore, as per our by-laws, we have selected an alternate location.

We had interests from two cities that expressed an interest in stepping forward, to ensure that IGBO 2009 would still take place.  I want to thank both of these communities for their commitment to the organization.  The board has selected Oklahoma City to be our hosts.   Ken Jones and Roger Klenke and the entire Oklahoma City Committee has their work cut out for them, but I am sure that with our support, they will once again rise to the occasion.

I would like to close by saying thank you for your patience, input and support for this past year.  If there is anything that I or the board can do to help make your experience into IGBO more rewarding and meaningful, please don’t hesitate to ask.

In Unity, Fellowship and Communication,

Greg
