It has been a busy time in the Southwest/Pacific Nations Region over the past several months.  I attended the California Spring Classic at the end of April, and would like to congratulate David Van Ryzin and Gary Woodling and their committee on another fantastic tournament, the largest in the tournament’s 24 year history.  A big “way to go” also goes to Jim Gilchrist for shooting a perfect 300 game during the tournament too!  I look forward to seeing everyone at their 25th anniversary next year.

Next up was IGBO in Denver for a week in meetings, catching up with old friends, making new ones, and some bowling.  I am pleased to welcome two new tournaments to our region and to the IGBO family:  Chuzapalooza in Tucson, Jan 25-27, and the San Jose Invitational Tournament in San Jose, CA, April 4-6.  Also one  league rejoined, the Tucson Desert Coyotes, after a 4 year absence.  Also at the General Membership meeting, IGBO saw Ron Suttora from San Diego retire for the second time from the position on IGBO Treasurer.  While it appeared to be a big loss for the region, Steve Mathis from Orange County was elected to the position!  Congratulations Steve!  Las Vegas was conditionally selected to host IGBO 2009 amid some concerns over their bid, which have been cleared up and it’s looking like IGBO might see its biggest tournament in over a decade take place in Las Vegas, 2009!

Finally, in Denver, it was awesome to see the 19 Kiwis having so much fun and representing New Zealand and our region so proudly.  I hope that someday soon we can experience another turnout like that.  I want to thank you all and personally invite you back to San Diego for IGBO Mid-Year 2008 and Las Vegas for IGBO 2009.

Shortly after IGBO, I was off to LOVIT in the Los Angeles area, for the ladies tournament.  Once again, Bert and Pam had the tournament run in its typical fantastic manner, with its late 60’s theme executed perfectly complete with tie-dyed shirts and “summer of love” music.  Once again, I would like to thank the Kiwis that attended, as well as out-going IGBO President Sharon Stump, and IGBO Vice President Stephanie Johnstone.  It is so much fun to attend a tournament as well organized as LOVIT, even if I don’t bowl.

Following LOVIT was HUGS in Long Beach.  Tim Connelly and his crew enjoyed a much larger tournament this year, due in part to word-of-mouth advertising because their tournament is so well organized, and so well executed.  The one day format is a nice change and very cost-effective, and I wish this tournament much success in the future.  The highlight of the tournament was no doubt the fantastic final match between Kent Steckbeck/ Michael Tseng vs. Mitch Mitchell/ Michelle Silver.  Congratulations to Kent and Michael on their fantastic effort and resulting victory.  On a very sad note, Tim Connelly passed away in August, and will be deeply missed in the Southern California bowling community, where he has been a fixture for many years.  My sincerest condolences go out to Tim’s friends and family.

Finally, there was SDIT the first weekend in August.  Yogi, Ron and their committee held a wonderful tournament, hosting over 260 bowlers.  Some of the highlights were adding 62 new IGBO associate members, Steve Smith’s 300 game, and Jason Ondeck’s 810 scratch series.  Congratulations!  Also, I would like to thank Mel Comerford, from Sydney, AUS, for attending, and also to congratulate her for winning the women’s singles event!  Also in attendance were IGBO Secretary Larry Sanchez, IGBO Treasurer Steve Mathis, Southeast Regional Director Ray Krasneck and Northwest Regional Director Tim Tkacik.  I guarantee we all had so much fun at the banquet on the beach that we new even considered discussing business!

SDIT also had the debut of the “new” IGBO store, with its amazing new collection of IGBO gear by ROK Enterprises.  Mike and Rick have done an amazing job incorporating the IGBO logo into their fantastic new line that is sure to be hugely successful everywhere they take it.

Just a reminder that renewal are coming up, so if you’re a league or tournament officer, we are using online renewal this year and the deadline for getting those completed and paid is Oct. 15.  Please get those submitted as soon as possible, and I look forward to seeing everyone soon!
